A New Flame

This "simply" put (pardon the pun) is Simply Red in their element. Their own brand of soul plus a bit of successful experimentation. And this is their most experimental album to date. Case in point: the title track "A New Flame." Now THAT'S a song! Very successfully combines tango and soul with smooth transitions between each section. On of my fave songs on the album is "It's Only Love." Sultry, sensual, laid-back it reminds me of a tropical night in Hawaii or St. Tropez or the like. Come to thick of it the whole first side of the album smacks of a romantic tropical getaway. One last note, once again Simply Red outremakes a remake of an original song. I think that they play "If You Don't Know Me By Now." as it was meant to be played. Classic soul with minimum fuss on musical instruments (piano, bass, & drums) and just letting the vocals shine through. Much better than the original by the Blue Notes.
